	Camera of Possibilities: A Workbook for a Carrier Bag Theory of Photography
Co-Authors: Mira Dayal &#38;amp; beck haberstroh
Editor: Katie Giritlian

Camera of Possibilities: A Workbook for a Carrier Bag Theory of Photography starts with a single sheet of paper. As you navigate the text, you’ll transform this sheet into a series of “paper cameras” that explore photographs you have taken, circulated, or received. These playful activities serve as props for reflecting on photography and its legacies of capture.

		<description>
	Carry Commons are prints that carry lessons from photographs.&#38;nbsp;Carry

Commons carry social possibilities practiced in SWANA photo histories.&#38;nbsp;Carry Commons

carry these lessons as we carry onward imagining against empire.

&#60;img width="1320" height="12" width_o="1320" height_o="12" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/0a81732a507678787afbf4ef2a3020618a56ae1ef4ca602922513311957cbc5c/Border.png" data-mid="214250530" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/0a81732a507678787afbf4ef2a3020618a56ae1ef4ca602922513311957cbc5c/Border.png" /&#62;
Specs
Each order includes 1 transparent print of 1 photograph, nested within a zine that shares the photograph’s history alongside prompts for engagement.

Distribution of Funds
At this time, 100% of funds are going to Gaza Mutual Aid Solidarity.
To Note
paper cameras press is operated by 1 person. We make select batches at a time to reduce waste, and we ask for patience for order delivery. Given the constant change in crisis symptomatic of imperial brutality, fund recipients may change over time.&#38;nbsp;

We are always learning, unlearning, in study. As we live with the words we have now, we will continue to find those words we need. Any language and calls-to-action published with each print may change over time.

This is the first print in the series. It emerges from the documentary We are the Palestinian People: Revolution Until Victory, newsreel, 1975. Here, we see a Palestinian person refusing the shutter’s transformation, when faced with a camera. Anglophonic subtitles translate their words to: “I don’t want you to take my picture here—wait until I return to my land—then you can take my picture.” We circulate this still in order to circulate the demands embedded in the photograph’s makeup.

Prices are per unit (i.e. per study pack). Adjust the quantity in your cart to reflect your desired number of study packs.The packs are designed to be easily shared. So, when thinking of the appropriate amount of kits for your group, I suggest a third of the number of your participants. For ex, if you have 12 students, I recommend 4 packs.Paper Cameras Press is an intimate platform operated by 1 person. Please place your order at least 3 weeks ahead of intended use.I deeply delight in connecting with educators and facilitators who are interested in using the study pack. Paper Cameras is always learning, unlearning, and in study. I believe in living with the words and resources we have in the present, in order to learn the words and resources we need. I imagine this study pack—its language, forms, and questions—will change over time.Paper Cameras Study Pack is sold at a sliding scale. &#60;img width="660" height="6" width_o="660" height_o="6" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/884ed07f06cbeb1a4027c1ed00c4651f362d2afe8f77b59c254ff44e644e8ce9/Border.png" data-mid="251718496" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/660/i/884ed07f06cbeb1a4027c1ed00c4651f362d2afe8f77b59c254ff44e644e8ce9/Border.png" /&#62;

	Since the study pack’s inception, I have been so grateful to share working prototypes with practitioners, teachers, thinkers, friends who have gifted this kit with insights and feedback that allowed this project to transform into something that can be shared with you. This project would simply not be, if it were not for:
beck haberstroh and Mira Dayal, dear friends, collaborators, and authors of the first Paper Cameras publication, who have provided crucial insights to this whole project since its inception, and who teach me everyday what it means to make pictures with care;Lukaza Branfman-Verissimo, dear friend with whom I share love for the viewfinder and who has inspired me to the many ways we can carry this powerful tool and Corita Kent’s legacy;kimi malka hanauer who supported the development of the introduction and whose practice as well as our shared study over the years has taught me the loving power with which print-based publishing can host the transformation of intimate questions into public, critical inquiry;Kameelah Janan Rasheed and Orange Tangent Study for supporting me with incredible tools, imagination, and courage to face this project with deep joy, discerning curiosity, and a loving honesty;Those who carried prototypes to your classrooms and shared them with your students who asked incredible questions: Mira Dayal, Jesse Dritz, Rami George, Eli Greene, and Shannon Mattern, Alice Procter; Those who carried prototypes to your worlds, and shared them with your respective imaging practices: beck haberstroh, kimi malka hanauer, Caroline Partamian, Kat Shannon, Sophia Tareen, Raquel Vigil, and Amy Yoshitsu;Those who visited my studio (physically and virtually) and talked through possibilities: Mariam Karim, Tsovinar Kuiumchian, Rehan Miskci, Mher Tarakjian, Nicolay Duque-Robayo, and Kim Upstill;Johann Diedrick who provided immense support and thought partnership to the lifecyle of this project;All worker owners at Converge Collaborative who teach me how to live with process and helped bring this project to its first workshop at Open Exposures, led by Louis Bryant III and supported by Michelle McCrary and Amy Yoshitsu; Josh Rios for inviting a prototype to be included in an exhibition at CAPE, “Practices in Proximity: Learning and Unlearning from Pedagogical Experience” and advisorship during graduate studies that nurtured the preliminary ideas of this project;Re’al Christian for editing and supporting the development of the introduction and additional activations of the cards with a robust generosity that allowed me to see the personal and honest footing of this whole project; Artists and lifelong friends Nicole Staake, Juliana Rowlands and Lauren Sandoval, who taught me how much possibility lives in the intimacy of a photo shoot, where the materials of our everyday life can be our costumes and our props, and whose own artistic practices show how much love can be held within a view. There are so many people to whom I am indebted.The list keeps growing with current and upcoming projects :))&#38;nbsp;

	paper cameras press is an&#38;nbsp;intimate publishing platform. I* collaborate with people to design and distribute learning aids** for studying photography and visual culture. &#60;img width="411" height="8" width_o="411" height_o="8" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/c75dfbd2c68efecfda9d27c717dcca235e9b619b1ec61c9588f2e3e817c83c94/Short-Border.png" data-mid="215400761" border="0" data-scale="33" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/411/i/c75dfbd2c68efecfda9d27c717dcca235e9b619b1ec61c9588f2e3e817c83c94/Short-Border.png" /&#62;
As the speed at which we*** make and consume images continues to increase, paper cameras press offers tools for making looking a tactile activity. These tools invite us to slow down our observation, consider the social and material conditions of image-making, and develop thoughtful practices in photography and related lens-based mediums.&#38;nbsp;paper cameras press seeks to support practices of observation that nourish our relationships with one another, rather than extract from them.

I am in the midst of updating this website—so please stay tuned for more!

	*Hi! My name is Katie :) You can read more about what drew me to start Paper Cameras here:&#38;nbsp;https://veralistcenter.org/publications/paper-cameras/
**By learning aid, I mean any tactile tool that supports physically engaging and thinking about photography and visual culture. These could be card decks, workbooks, worksheets; or, even interactive games, paper viewfinders, and more.
***I use“we” when talking about photography generally, as I understand photography to be a sticky thing in the world that impacts all of us.

		<description>
	paper cameras press formally commits to adhering to the Palestinian international call for Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) and to complying with the guidelines of the Palestinian Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI).We stand in total solidarity with the people of Palestine, who continue to struggle for liberation against the ongoing genocidal violence of Western imperial and Zionist powers.Even though we are a small press with currently just 1 worker, we are active participants in memory work, archival stewardship, and the field of photography—all of which are webbed into institutional fabrics that have historically been weaponized by imperial actors to manufacture consent for genocide. Thus we, both as individuals and with our larger connective capacities, commit to not crossing the international picket line for Palestine. Specifically, we commit—where applicable—to:
Boycott any cultural product commissioned by an official Israeli body;Boycott any cultural product funded by an official Israeli body, even if not commissioned;Boycott any cultural event that is partially or fully sponsored or funded by an official Israeli body;Refrain from participation in any form of academic and cultural cooperation, collaboration, or joint projects with Israeli institutions, including suspension of all forms of funding and subsidies to/from these institutions;Refrain from hosting or circulating any events or cultural products operating under the auspices of “normalization”, or which advance a false symmetry between oppressed and oppressor;Support Palestinian academic and cultural institutions directly without requiring them to partner with Israeli counterparts as an explicit or implicit condition for such support.As specified in the guidelines, the campaigns reject boycotts of individuals based on identity, and targets institutions and organizations which represent, extend, or normalize the state’s political interests.
We join many&#38;nbsp;other small presses, and are grateful to those who have led the way.
