Gaza Mutual Aid Solidarity is a group with loved ones in Gaza doing direct mutual aid to displaced and distressed families since November 2023. GMAS has provided clean water, food, tents, clothing, and direct cash to families in Gaza. They have supplied clay ovens, repaired a sewer system, installed a water well, supported a revived school, and funded medical workers and civil defense crews. GMAS is also supporting local pottery makers and distributing their wares.

In his poem “If I Must Die,” Refaat Alareer prompts readers to fly kites in the name of a liberated Palestine: “make it white with a long tail.” Alareer was martyred by the Israeli military on December 6, 2023.

If I Must Die

If I must die,
you must live
to tell my story
to sell my things
to buy a piece of cloth
and some strings,
(make it white with a long tail)
so that a child, somewhere in Gaza
while looking heaven in the eye
awaiting his dad who left in a blaze—
and bid no one farewell
not even to his flesh
not even to himself—
sees the kite, my kite you made, flying up above,
and thinks for a moment an angel is there
bringing back love.
If I must die
let it bring hope,
let it be a tale.
